What Family Means to Me by Caroline Behne from Germany

In a family you can talk about anything. You can tell them everything because they are like your best friends. You have fun with your family no matter what you do.
Even if there is a fight or a misunderstanding, you have to tolerate each person because when you fight with someone, you notice now much you miss that person and how much you love that person. You just can't live without that person.

If you go shopping with your mother, you see her just like a friend. Or if you go and have lunch with your father, he is also a friend of yours. Or, if you do something with your brothers, they are also like your friends.

I think it is very important that you have a family because you are learning so many things. You learn to live with other people, you learn to share things, and you learn to show consideration for someone. I just can't live without my family because I would miss them so much. I would even miss the mistakes they make.

Caring for Pets Teaches Responsibility

Caring for pets teaches children how to be gentle with all kinds of animals and how important it is to care for all living beings. They learn there are no differences between animals and humans.

Ryoko Jinnouchi from Japan

Do you think children should have pets? My family used to keep dogs, fish, flying squirrels, and hamsters. From that experience, I recommend that parents let children have pets. Caring for pets teaches children responsibility.

For example, they must feed the pet, take it for a walk, and clean it. It teaches them how to be gentle with all kinds of animals and how important it is to care for all living beings. They learn there are no differences between animals and humans.

Pets also help children to relax and be calm, and they make children smile. I am always happy when I see children with pets because I know they are learning how to care and love.

Do you enjoy wearing Levi's blue jeans? Blue jeans have become popular all over the world, but do you know how they got started? Read on to find out...

Levi Strauss was born in Germany in the mid 1800's and emigrated to the United States as a young man. He lived in New York City and learned the dry-goods business for several years. In 1853 he took his knowledge and his dreams to San Francisco (California., USA.) His dream to succeed came true over the next 20 years as he became a very successful businessman.

Many of Levi Strauss' customers were cowboys and miners. They needed clothing that was strong and durable. Strauss found a special fabric from France that was comfortable and lasted a long time. It was called "serge de Nimes," which was later shortened to the word denim.

Another man named Jacob Davis bought large amounts of the denim fabric from Levi Strauss. He was a tailor who made pants for hard-working men. One of his customers was continually tearing the pockets off his pants. So Jacob Davis decided to put rivets on certain parts of the pants to make them stronger. The customer loved the new pants so much that he told all his friends, and soon Jacob Davis was busy making lots of pants with rivets.

Jacob Davis soon realized that using rivets was a great business idea, and he didn't want anybody to steal that idea. He decided that he would need to get a patent. But being a poor tailor, he didn't have enough money to pay for the patent. After thinking it over, he went to the businessman Levi Strauss and told him his idea. He said, "If you agree to pay for the patent, we will share the profits from the riveted pants." Levi Strauss agreed, and the new riveted pant business was called Levi Strauss and Company. Today Levi's jeans are more popular than ever, and Levi's name continues to live on.

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat accumulated to the extent that have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.
Obesity increases various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive dietary calories, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness. Evidence to support the view that some obese people eat little yet gain weight due to a slow metabolism is limited; on average obese people have a greater energy expenditure than their thin counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body mass.
The primary treatment for obesity is dieting and physical exercise. To supplement this, or in case of failure, anti-obesity drugs may take to reduce appetite or inhibit fat absorption. In severe cases, surgery is performed or an intragastric balloon is placed to reduce stomach volume and/or bowel length, leading to earlier satiation and reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food.
